What to wear to the races: your Spring Carnival dress hire guide

Spring Carnival is the one time of year the whole country gets dressed up on a weekday. It's also the easiest way to end up with a wardrobe full of dresses you've worn once, photographed once, and never touched again.

Derby Day: black and white

Derby Day has the strictest tradition of the carnival: black and white, head to toe. It's also the most fun to dress for, because everyone's playing by the same rules and it's all in the details. Most people go formal and go long: think a sharp monochrome midi, a white maxi with black accessories, or a black gown with a statement white headpiece.

Melbourne Cup Day: bring the colour

Cup Day is the main event and the dress code loosens right up. Bold colour, prints, and the biggest headwear of the week. If you've been waiting for a reason to wear red, this is it.

Oaks Day: florals and soft colour

Oaks Day is traditionally the most feminine day of the carnival. Florals, pastels, pinks and anything that floats. Pair it with a floral headpiece and you're done.

Stakes Day: relaxed and bright

Stakes Day is the family day that closes out the week. Still dressy, but more relaxed, so it's the day for a bright midi, a two-piece set, or something you can actually sit on the grass in.

How to get race day right

• Check your dress code. Members' enclosures and marquees are stricter than the general lawns, so look up the rules for your ticket before you book. If in doubt, a midi is always right.
• Plan for grass. Stilettos sink. Block heels or wedges will get you from the car park to the last race.
• Headwear finishes it. A fascinator, headpiece or hat is part of the look in spring, and plenty of lenders list them alongside their dresses.
• Layer up. Melbourne spring can do four seasons in a day, so pack a jacket.
• Book early. The Saturday race days book out first. Lock in your piece now, then try it on with the lender before the day if they offer it.
